Knowing what the basic water chemistry for swimming pools should be and how to test for them is an important part of keeping a pool ready for good times.
Importance of Pool Chemicals
Most of us do not think about the chemicals that go into keeping a pool clean and safe for use beyond the chlorine that we smell. The chemicals that go into a pool play an important role in making it safe to swim in as well as protecting the pool. Many of the chemicals keep microbes from causing us harm and the conditions that the pool is in like its pH and alkalinity help these chemicals function in optimal condition. When pools have a balanced water chemistry and a good filtration system, we can peace of mind knowing that we can enjoy our pool without any worries.
Factors of Pool Chemistry
There are many factors that go into keeping a pool clear and clean. These include:
- Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm. This measures carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides, and other alkaline substances in the pool. Alkalinity keeps the pH from fluctuating all over the place.
- pH: 7.2-7.8. Measures how basic or acidic the water is.
- Calcium Hardness: 200-400 ppm. Measures how “hard” or “soft” the water is.
- Chlorination: 1.0-2.0 ppm. Sanitizes the pool.
Testing Your Pool
When you are using your pool in its peak season, you should be regularly testing its chemical levels. This means checking once a week as well as before and after extreme weather to make sure everything is still looking good.
Forgetting to test can lead to costly consequences. If there is an imbalance in chemicals, this could lead to damage to the pool’s features and equipment or even create a dangerous swimming environment for you and your family.
There are a few different options for testing pool water. You can use test strips, a liquid test kit, a digital testing kit, or professional help. Some are as straightforward as dipping a strip in the water while others will ask you to add drops of chemicals to indicate chemistry levels or test the levels in a specific order.
When you test your pool, make sure to grab a sample of water from the middle of the pool so you aren’t pulling up anything that is being pushed around by skimmers and jets. To get the cleanest sample possible, insert your cup into the pool upside down and scoop out the water in one swift motion.
